| Yesterday found me lurking in Vauxhall at the annual glad-handing session of the great, good, ok and downright awful of th champagne producers and importers. this year's refreshing change was that the glad-handing seemed to be at a minimum, largely because there were no supplier tables, just three central ones with vintage, rose and demi-sec wines. The biggest load of rubbish on show was Bollinger Grande annee 1997. I understand they are not making a 1998 which considering it was a far better vintage is a bit of a surprise. £55 or £60 they want for this wine which is, frankly, not worth much past £20. The 99 vintage was showing as OK, but 2000 looks very dodgy indeed (although none of the really big players were showing a 2000). Pick of the bunch were Pol Roger's sublime 1998, Charles Heidsiecks biscuity 1995, Gosset's rose and roederer Rich from the demi-secs. Also showing well although still too young was Jacquesson's 1996 Avize.
